Portrait Of A Woman

A New Jazz Song Cycle with Lyrics and Music by David Newton

Each song is a chapter in the book of a real life love story

featuring Heather Cairncross on Vocals
and David Newton on Jazz Piano
with String Quartet, Double Bass and Percussion

with String Arrangements by Dee Palmer

In 2008 David Newton was voted best Jazz Pianist in the British Jazz awards for the eighth time. The string arrangements are by Dee Palmer, who, during her extensive musical career has composed and arranged for every genre of music from Jethro Tull to the LSO.  Chris Hill also plays bass for the Jamie Cullum Band and the percussionist Owen Gunnell adds his own ‘phenomenal artistry’ (Daily Telegraph).

The final ingredient is the wonderful String Quartet.

This concert is a glorious mix of the very best from the world of jazz and classical music.

“her clarity, extraordinary range and distinctive style seemed to me like a sort of combination of Cleo Laine, Ella Fitzgerald and Edith Piaf. Wonderful!”

Gira Con Girshwin - a musical tour round South America

Heather Cairncross takes the timeless songs of George Gershwin on a tour of South America

This concert features breathtaking arrangements especially written by her pianist Joss Peach and bass player Steve Thompson, infusing your favourite Gershwin melodies with exciting Latin colours and rhythms. Completing this dynamic line up are the considerable talents of Ben Reynolds on Drums and percussion and the sublime Joe Auckland on Trumpet.

“Standards from the Gershwin songbook, all very familiar but performed in a refreshing new style, resulted in an outstanding concert for the festival music programme… Leading the group was Hove based vocalist Heather Cairncross, a former member of the Swingle Singers, whose wonderful clarity, extraordinary range and distinctive style seemed to me like a sort of combination of Cleo Laine, Ella Fitzgerald and Edith Piaf – Wonderful!
No less accomplished were the musicians.”
